Anita, the biopic of Hongkong pop legend Anita Mui, has dropped a teaser trailer as well as three character posters.
The film, produced by Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and directed by first-time helmer Longman Leung (writer of the Cold War movies), stars Hongkong fashion model Louise Wong as the Canto-pop legend and award-winning actress.
Wong, 31, was cast after the production company reportedly spent more than three years looking for an actress to portray Mui. Her casting was kept under wraps until last week.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film opens with Miu’s final concert in 2003 just before she died of cervical cancer at the age of 40. It then looks back on her decades-long career.
Edko Film, Kong’s company, said in a statement: “In a business where stars rise and fall quickly, Anita remained at the top of her game throughout her career. Her untimely death at the age of 40 only solidified her legacy and her songs continue to attract new fans and inspire performers.”
Sony Pictures will distribute the movie in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam later this year.
