Hard to believe it’s taken so long, but Fann Wong is making her Mediacorp English drama debut — on Titoudao: Inspired by a True Wayang Star, premiering Feb 18 on MeWatch (formerly Toggle) and Ch 5.

An adaptation of the local play of the same name by playwright Goh Boon Teck, Titoudao is about Ah Chiam, a Hokkien street opera actress (played by Malaysian newcomer Koe Yeet) who overcame personal and professional obstacles to become a wayang starlet.

Bundle of joy: Fann Wong in a scene from 'Titoudao'.

The play, first performed in 1994, is based on the life of Madam Oon Ah Chiam, who is Goh’s mother. Fann plays Ah Bu, Ah Chiam’s mother.

Titoutdao is the third stage-to-screen re-imagining — following Dick Lee’s Fried Rice Paradise and Michael Chiang’s Mixed Signals — in Mediacorp’s ‘Lights. Camera. Singapore.’ initiative which champions homegrown content.

Set in the 1940s-80s, the 13-part biopic series, which just wrapped in Ipoh last month, also stars Nick Shen, Andie Chen, Constance Lau, and Lina Ng. Look out for 8 DAYS’ set visit report in the coming weeks.

Titoudao: Inspired by a True Wayang Star premieres Feb 18, 9.30pm on Ch 5. It will also be streamed on MeWatch (formerly Toggle) from Feb 18.
