Folklore, HBO Asia’s horror anthology series will be back for Season 2, with two episodes directed by women.

Headed once again by showrunner Eric Khoo, production on the seven-part hour-long series will start early 2021 in seven Asian territories, said WarnerMedia in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 1). The show will drop later in the year on HBO and HBO Go.

Each standalone episode of Folklore is based on the superstitions and myths from each director’s country. The Season 2 directors lined-up include Thailand’s Sittisiri Mongkolsiri, Taiwan's Liao Shih-Han, Indonesia’s Billy Christian, Malaysia’s Bradley Liew, Singapore’s Nicole Midori Woodford, and Japan’s Seiko Matsuda.

Yes, that Seiko Matsuda, the 1980s Japanese pop singer, and she's making her directorial debut. In a Whatsapp message to 8dsays.sg, Khoo said, “She told me a personal ghost story and I felt she had to bring it to TV."

Khoo previously directed Matsuda, 58, in Ramen Teh, the 2018 food-themed drama starring Jeanette Aw, Takumi Saito and Mark Lee. As for Singapore’s entry by Nicole Midori Woodford, Khoo would only say it’s “a creepy mother-and-child story.”

“As the feedback has been so positive for our anthology series, we will not deviate too much from Season 1, and will retain the famous ghouls of Asian folklore,” said Khoo in a separate interview with Variety.

He added, “However we will move away from the social commentary aspect and ramp up the paranormal fear factor.”

The first season of Folklore debuted on HBO in Asia in October 2018 and in the US in February 2019. It also made rounds on the film festival circuit, with various episodes premiering at such events as Toronto International Festival, Fantastic Fest, Tokyo International Film Festival, and SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.
