Good news for anime fans: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is coming to a cineplex near you.

Anime streaming service Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed on Wednesday (May 11) that the latest film in the beloved anime franchise will be out globally later this year. The film will debut in Japan first on June 11 before making its way to the rest of the world; in Singapore, the movie will be in Japanese with English and Chinese subtitles.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the second film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise; the first, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, was released in 2018 and went on to gross US$120 million (S$167 mil) worldwide.

Here’s the official synopsis of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero: “The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves “Super Heroes”. They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!”

The film will be directed by Tetsuro Kodama and features a Japanese voice cast including Masako Nozawa, Toshio Furukawa, Yūko Minaguchi, Ryō Horikawa, Mayumi Tanaka, Aya Hisakawa, Takeshi Kusao, Miki Itō, Bin Shimada, Kōichi Yamadera, Masakazu Morita, Hiroshi Kamiya, Mamoru Miyano, Miyu Irino, Volcano Ota, and Ryota Takeuchi.

Created by Akira Toriyama, the Dragon Ball phenomenon began in 1984 when it premiered in Sheuisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, a manga anthology publication. Over the years, it has sold 260 million copies worldwide and spawned countless TV and movie anime, games, and merchandising. (In 2009, Hollywood made Dragonball: Evolution, a misguided live-action adaptation, where the Japanese characters were played predominantly by a very white cast… come to think of it, the less you know about it the better.)
