Donnie Yen is kicking off the Year of the Rabbit with a bang.

Golden Village has dropped the official trailer for Sakra, due in cinemas on Jan 16.

An adaptation of Louis Cha’s classic wuxia novel, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, Sakra is set in the Northern Song Dynasty and follows Qiao Feng (Yen), the heroic and chivalrous leader of the Beggars’ Sect who becomes a pariah after he’s accused of being a Khitan.

The movie also stars Chen Yuqi, Cya Liu, Kara Wai, Wu Yue, and Cheung Siu Fai, with special guest appearances by Liu Leung Wai and Tsui Siu Ming.

Besides acting in it, Yen is also calling the shots as producer and director; Sakra is his first directorial feature since 2004’s Protégé de la Rose Noire, the action-comedy starring Gillian Chung, Charlene Choi and Ekin Cheng.

Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Yen says Sakra will be just as “kickass” as his other movies — Kill Zone, Flash Point, Ip Man, Raging Fire — and that he got “to create something refreshing, a different kind of wuxia universe.”

Hopefull, Sakra will appease Yen's hardcore fans who were disappointed that his recent offering, the rescue drama Come Back Home, was short on action. And if Sakra doesn’t work for them, there’s John Wick: Chapter 4 to look out for. Just saying.
