Netflix has shared the trailer for Copycat Killer, the adaptation of award-winning Japanese author Miyuki Miyabe’s 2001 novel, Mohohan. The streaming service will drop the Saw-esque thriller on March 31.

Directed by Henri Chang (Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner) and Chang Jung-Chi (We Are Champions), The Copycat Killer is set in 1990s Taiwan and stars Chris Wu Kang-ren (Light the Night) as a prosecutor up to his eyeballs in catching a media-savvy serial killer.

You know the drill: to catch a killer, he has to sleep, eat, shit and piss like one. How dark would our hero venture before he burns out his fuse?

Miyabe’s book sold more than 1.5 million copies in Japan and more than 100,000 copies in Taiwan. It was made into a movie, Mohou-han in 2002, starring Masahiro Nakai, and later a TV movie in 2016, with Miki Nakatani.

On relocating the setting from Tokyo to Taipei, Copycat Killer producer Hank Tseng said, “The late ‘90s in Taiwan was an era of disintegrating social values, where truths and lies were muddled and mass media was on a high. Through this series, I hope to convey the simple principle that justice is irreplaceable.”

The NC16-rated, 10-ep Chinese-language series also stars Alice Ko, Tuo Tsung-hua, Yao Chun-yao, Fandy Fan, Cammy Chiang, Hsia Teng-Hung and Ruby Lin.
