CNY Movies 2022: What Else To Watch Besides Jack Neo’s Ah Girls Go Army?
Here is a guide to movies to catch in cinemas and online during the Chinese New Year holidays, between now and Feb 3.

Ah Girls Go Army (Feb 1, sneaks from Jan 28)
Jack Neo’s latest magnum opus is about the trials and tribulations of Singapore’s pioneer batch of female army recruits (or is it NCC cadets?) undergoing basic training. Is the movie as progressive as it looks? Hmmm…Skip it or watch it? Have you seen the trailer? Let’s just say that you don’t come to a Jack Neo movie for greatness, you come for the…sorry, what’s the question again?

Reunion Dinner (now in cinemas)
Number 1 director Ong Kuo Sin’s screwball comedy — about a man (Lawrence Wong) trying to impress his girlfriend’s father with help from a kooky group of background actors (led by Mark Lee), is now in its second week of release.Skip it or watch it? I don't about you guys but I'm in the mood for Holistic Way supplements.

King Richard (now in cinemas)
Biopic of tennis champs and sisters Serena and Venus Williams as seen through the eyes of their brash, control-freak father Richard Williams (Will Smith).Skip it or watch it? Smith’s buzzy performance might earn him his third Oscar nomination.

I Am What I Am (now in cinemas)
Nothing to do with the Gloria Gaynor song but a Chinese animated feature about three lads who pick up life-changing life lessons from a grumpy instructor while training for a lion dance competition.\Watch it or skip it? CNY is incomplete without some lion-dancing…even if it’s animated.:

Nasi Lemak 1.0 (now in cinemas)
Malaysian rapper Namewee stars and directs this sequel (or is it prequel?) to his 2011 comedy. This time, Chef Huang (Namewee) is transported back to ancient Melaka Sultanate to prevent a war with the Chinese. Or something like that.Watch it or skip it? This looks like something best appreciated when you’re running a fever. Oops. Better stay at home, then.

The Falls (out on Netflix Jan 29)
Named Best Narrative Feature at last year’s Golden Horse Awards, this pandemic drama stars Alyssa Chia and Gingle Wang (Till We Meet Again) as mother and daughter whose relationship start to unravel as they're cooped up in an apartment during a quarantine.Watch it or skip it? Sounds like a movie I'd watch after reunion dinner.

New Kung Fu Cult Master 1 (opens Feb 1, sneaks from Jan 28)
Wong Jing (ugh) and Keung Kwok Man helm this adaptation of classic wuxia novel The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, with a star-studded cast, including Louis Koo, Donnie Yen Raymond Lam, and Janice Man.Watch it or skip it? Fans of Wong Jing, please step forward…

My Best Friend’s Breakfast (opens Jan 28)
Taiwanese high-school romance about a food-obsessed 17-year-old sophomore (Li Mu) helping her senior (Zhou Xingzhe) break up with his cheating girlfriend.Watch it or skip it? Is it too early to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Jackass Forever (opens Feb 3)
More than a decade after the last Jackass movie, Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O round up the old gang (all pushing 50!) and a few new faces for more insane and inane pranks and stunts. What’s not to like? Watch it or skip it? Johnny Knoxville makes his final Jackass appearance! See him get the wind knocked out of him by a bull, leaving him with a broken wrist, broken ribs and a concussion. (This is probably more painful than Ah Girls Go Army… ouch!)

Moonfall (opens Feb 3)
Look up in the sky! The moon is crashing into Earth — and it’s all disaster porn maestro Roland Emmerich’s fault. Send Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry and John Bradley (aka Game of Thrones’ Samwell Tarly) to save humanity!Watch it or skip? If you think Netflix’s The Silent Sea is a little too silent, then this will cheer you up. Maybe. Probably.
