James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way Of Water Launches On Disney+ In June
James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will make its Disney+ debut on June 7.
Not exactly a movie made for mobile devices and laptops, the eco-themed, IMAX-fied epic sequel grossed over US$2.3 billion (S$3.07 bil) worldwide during its theatrical run (it opened in Singapore on Dec 15) and nominated for four Oscars, winning one for Best Special Visual Effects.
The follow-up to 2009’s Avatar is set more than a decade after the event of the first movie and follows the Sully Family — Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their offspring — as they defend their homeland against human colonists.
The Way of Water is one of the four sequels Cameron signed off; the others will be out every alternate December through 2028.
Cameron previously said the series could end after the threequel if The Way of Water doesn’t do well at the box-office. But guess what? It made shitloads of moolah and the King of the World now has to finish what he started.
He also said he might not direct Avatar 4 and 5. “The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming,” said Cameron in an Empire interview. “I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time — I don’t know if that’s after three or after four — I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
Last we heard, Avatar 3 is in post-production; it was shot simultaneously with The Way of Water. “And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written,” the Marvel-hating filmmaker said on HBO Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? (via The Hollywood Reporter) in January, “We even have some of 4 in the can.”
Avatar 3 is slated to open in cinemas on Dec 20 2024 in the US. Have fun watching the first two Avatars on Disney+.
