Trailer Watch: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Introduces Jonathan Majors As MCU’s Next Big Bad, Kang The Conqueror
As the MCU Phase 4 approaches its end next month with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel Studios is gearing up for Phase 5 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Marvel Studios has premiered the first trailer for the threequel, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the titular characters who’ll take on the MCU’s next big bad, Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors.
The trailer starts off fairly light: A post-Endgame Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Rudd) enjoying life as a celebrity. (Despite the fame, he still gets mistaken for Spider-Man. D’oh!) Then things get dark pretty quick when Scott’s daughter (Freaky’s Kathryn Newton) constructs a beacon — “it’s like a satellite for deep space” — to the Quantum Realm.
Bad idea. The next thing you know, father and daughter alongside the Wasp, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and (Janet Van Dyne) are sucked into “a sacred universe beneath ours”.
There, the gang encounters assorted aliens and beasts, including one unnamed character played by Bill Murray. (Yes, Bill friggin’ Murray is in the MCU.) He seems friendly and harmless. And there’s Kang the Conqueror who looks like he runs the place, not someone to be trifled with. He offers the heroes a way out but what does he want from them in return?
Whatever it is, Kang isn’t going away anytime soon: he’s the next-Thanos-level villain in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the first of two movies coming in 2025 — the other, Avengers: Secret Wars — that will cap Phase 6’s The Multi-Verse Saga.
Majors is no stranger in the MCU: he first appeared as He Who Remains, a variation of Kang, in the Season 1 finale of Disney+ series Loki.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens in Singapore cinemas on Feb 16. Watch the trailer below:
