8 Horror Classics — Including The Exorcist — Return To The Big Screen For Scream Asia 2019

Scream Asia is back — and it’s kicking it old school. This year, eight classic horror movies from the 1970s to ’90s will be screened over weekends at The Cathay Cineplex from Oct 5 to Oct 27.

Kicking off the fright-tivities tomorrow night is Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. Carrie is the first King novel to be made into a movie.

The other movies in the line-up are: The Omen (Oct 6), Friday the 13th (Oct 12), The Exorcist: Director’s Cut (Oct 13), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Oct 19), Alien (Oct 20), A Nightmare on Elm Street (Oct 26), and The Thing (Oct 27).

So if you’ve only seen these movies on the telly (or, God forbid, mobile devices) — or worse, only caught their remakes (ugh!) — here’s your chance to catch the original mayhem and menace on the big screen, as they were intended for.

Another highlight of the Scream Asia is the short film competition. Since its launch in June, the contest has attracted entries from Brunei, China, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. The competition closed on Sept 30.

The results will be announced on Oct 26. Winning entries will take home cash prizes about US$9,500 (S$13,100), and one of the top three directors will be selected to develop a feature film with media company MM2 Entertainment.

The works will be judged by Scream Asia creative consultant Eric Khoo; JongSuk Thong Nam, managing director of Network of Asian Fantastic Films, Asia’s largest genre film event; and Taiwanese filmmaker Giddens Ko (Mon Mon Mon Monsters).

Ko will also be conducting a Masterclass lecture on Oct 26 at 2mm Talent Hub (3pm-5pm). Attendees will also get a pair of tickets for a special screening of Mon Mon Mon Monsters on Oct 25.
