You Pay Good Money To See Ryan Reynolds And Samuel L Jackson Swear In ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’

It’s the only reason to watch this formulaic buddy/road flick.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (NC16)

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L Jackson

Directed by Patrick Hughes

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson make a dynamite odd couple: the former is a disgraced protection agent trying to restore his AAA service rating, and the latter is the contract killer he has to escort from Manchester to The Hague in 27 hours to testify against an Eastern European dictator (Gary Oldman revisiting his Air Force One days).

It’s a very ‘90s buddy/road flick, which I suspect was probably written around that time as well. Reynolds and Jackson’ sweary banter is a lot of fun, enlivening the old-school car chases and workmanlike shoot-outs and a draggy third act. That said, lawyers at Marvel Studios should look at pairing Deadpool and Nick Fury in a one-off adventure stat. (***)
