'Tulip Fever' Is A Lukewarm Prestige Film That's Pretty To Look At

This movie was made in 2014.

Tulip Fever (M18)

Starring Dane DeHaan, Alicia Vikander

Directed by Justin Chadwick

Set during the tulip mania in 17th century Netherlands, this period drama stars Dane DeHaan as a poor painter planning to elope with his married muse (Alicia Vikander). But first, he hopes to make a killing by investing in tulip futures.

The movie — based on Deborah Moggach’s 1999 best-selling novel — was filmed in 2014, but only now does it finally see the light, after countless reported re-edits.

Sadly, Tulip Fever is no longer Oscar bait, but a wannabe prestige film — inert,  patchy and forgettable — that’s more like a truncated version of a 10-hour Netflix show.

Clearly, the fever has subsided. (**)
