US President Donald Trump has an issue with Parasite 's historic Best Picture win at this year’s Oscars.
At a rally at Colorado on Thursday (Feb 20), Trump spent some time attacking Bong Joon-Ho’s film. “How bad were the Academy Awards this year? he asked. “Did you see it?”
He continued, “The winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about? We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of that, they give them best movie of the year? Was it good? I don’t know. Let’s get Gone with the Wind. Can we get Gone with the Wind back, please?”
Gone with the Wind? Wait, was there one of the nine films nominated this year?
Trump was also displeased with Brad Pitt, calling him “a little wiseguy” for his swipe at the Trump impeachment trial for blocking testimony of former national security adviser.
Pitt, in his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor, cracked, “They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week. I’m thinking maybe Quentin [Tarantino] does a movie about it — in the end, the adults do the right thing.”
Responding to Trump's put-down, Neon, Parasite’s distributor in the US, tweeted that it was “understandable” that Trump couldn’t figure out the film. “He can’t read [the subtitles],” it said, including the hashtag #Bong2020.
