‘Train to Busan’ Director’s Follow-Up ‘Psychokinesis’ Is A Lightweight Superhero Drama

Fans of the zombie flick will be disappointed.

Psychokinesis (NC16)

Starring Ryu Seung-Ryong, Shim Eun-Kyung

Directed by Yeon Sang-Ho

A deadbeat dad (Ryu Seung-Ryong) acquires telekinetic superpowers after drinking mountain spring water contaminated by a meteor crash. And with great power comes great responsibility: the budding Professor X uses his gift to help his estranged daughter (Shim Eun-Kyung) and her friends in a battle against corrupt land developers, and then some.
Director Yeon Sang-Ho’s follow-up to his zombie thriller Train to Busan is considerably lightweight, tonally uneven and, ultimately, disappointing. It’s quite obvious that Yeon’s strengths lie less in showcasing the superhero shenanigans than the poignant father and daughter relationship. On Netflix; in Korean with English and Chinese subtitles.
