If you told me a year ago that there would be a third Spongebob Squarepants movie (after 2004’s The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and 2015’s The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water), I’d probably have said, “No way”. But when the trailer for The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run dropped this afternoon (Nov 15), my reaction is a flat-out “Whoa”.
The reason: Keanu Reeves is in it. And it's a very strange cameo.
The plot of Sponge on the Run has something to do with the aquatic duo Spongebob and Patrick embarking on a road trip to The Lost City of Atlantic, where they hope to find Spongebob’s missing pet snail Gary.
Along the way the pair encounter Reeves or rather his head. In a tumbleweed. (Cue to the 1’01” mark.) “I’m made out of sage and I am a sage…so it works out very well,” says Reeves, delivered in classic Keanu-Zen mode, replete with a twinkle in his eye.
2019 has been a great year for Reeves so far. He scored big with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, voiced the scene-stealing daredevil action figure Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, and played an a-hole version of himself in the Netflix rom-com Always Be My Maybe. (And we finally met his girlfriend, artist Alexandra Grant!)
Three months after Sponge on the Run opens, Keeves will star in another highly anticipated threequel, Bill & Ted Face the Music, where the heavy-metal loving duo are experiencing a mid-life crisis. But that’s another story for another time.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run opens in cinemas May 21, 2020.
