It's hate at first sight when Godzilla meets King Kong.
We get to catch a glimpse of the iconic beasties' internecine relationship in the first trailer of Godzilla vs Kong, the fourth and concluding (?) chapter in the MonsterVerse franchise that started with 2014’s Godzilla, followed by 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
In the sequel — directed by Adam Wingard (Death Note, Blair Witch) — Godzilla has turned on humanity and no one knows why. While scientists are figuring things out, the only way to stop the mayhem is with more mayhem and this is where Kong steps into the ring.
Whatever bad blood they share, it’ll be settled in what appears to be Hongkong. (Is that the Bank of China?) Good luck cleaning up afterwards.
The feud is probably over a misunderstanding a la Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. They’ll eventually break bread together but not before knocking down half the skyscrapers on the planet.
The movie — produced by the China-owned Legendary Entertainment — has also assembled a monster cast, including Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir.
Besides Godzilla, another Asian character seen fleetingly in the trailer is Japanese actor Shun Oguri (Let Me Eat Your Pancreas). He looks like he’s playing a scientist. We hope he has more than three lines of dialogue and lives to see the end credits.
Elsewhere, according to IMDB, Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians) and Zhang Ziyi — reprising her character from Godzilla: King of Monsters — are in the ensemble as well. We’ll know more when Godzilla Vs Kong opens in cinemas here on Mar 25.
