‘The Red Turtle’ Is A Beautiful Silent Anime About Man's Relationship With Nature

There is no dialogue in this movie – but you’ll be having one after watching it.

The Red Turtle (PG)

Directed by Michael Dudok de Wit

If Terrence Malick ever made an animated feature, The Red Turtle would be it. Co-produced by the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away), this dialogue-free fable is about a man stranded on an island, and the only thing getting in his way of escaping is the titular crimson reptile.

Like so many of Malick’s films, Dutchman Michael Dudok de Wit’s anime examines man’s volatile relationship with nature: it’s deeply philosophical, visually gorgeous, and plays like a surreal dream, the kind you have when you have a fever or after you had one too many scoops of Ben & Jerry’s. Exclusively at The Projector.
