'The Mimic' Is By The Book But Effective Horror

Who's heading up to Jangsan Mountain?

The Mimic (PG13)

Starring Yum Jung-Ah, Park Hyuk-Kwon, Shin Rin-Ah

Directed by Huh Jung

Japan’s Aokigahara Forest in The Forest. Taiwan’s Dakeng Hills in The Tag-Along 2. And now, Korea’s Jangsan Mountain is the latest spook central to grace the big screen in the creepy The Mimic. Following a personal tragedy, Seoul housewife Hee-Yeon (A Tale of Two Sisters’ Yum Jung-Ah) hopes to start anew by moving with her family to the countryside. There, she encounters a phantom menace that lures its victims by imitating human voices — one of them is Hee-Yeon’s lost son. The scare-fest is by the book, but effective, filled with moments of genuine horror and heartbreak, especially in the end. (***)
