'Satan's Slaves' Is Indonesia's No. 1 Fright Fest of 2017

For fans of 'The Conjuring' and 'Insidious'.

Satan’s Slaves (PG13)

Starring Tara Bastro, Bront Palarae

Directed by Joko Anwar

Indonesia’s No.1 movie of last year — and a remake of a 1980 spook-fest — stars Tara Bastro (HBO’s Halfworlds) as a young lady fending off devil worshippers in the outskirts of Jakarta… in a big house, right next to a cemetery. Just lovely.

I’ve never seen the original, but there are parts that recall James Wan’s The Conjuring and Insidious, and even the works of George A Romero. The chills are by-the-book, but effective. At least, it’s no The Faith of Anna Waters. (Sorry, Kelvin Tong, you really dropped the ball on that one.) In Bahasa Indonesia with English subtitles. (**1/2)
