It’s been more than two years and Bong Joon-Ho still has a tough time wrapping his head around the worldwide success of his film Parasite.

Speaking at an on-stage interview (per Variety) at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday (July 7), Bong, 51, said, “I had no idea that Parasite would be such a global hit. Its success was far beyond my expectations. Though I made it in exactly the same way as normal. And I remain unchanged by it. I mean look at me, I’m exactly the same.”

Bong’s clash-of-the-classes dark comedy won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019 and went on to win four Oscars, including Best Picture, a first for a non-English language movie.

During the interview, he also gave an update on the Parasite series on HBO. “The subject [of class wars] continues to have resonance in France and elsewhere,” he said. “Many of [us] would like to be rich, but I think in all of us there is a fear of becoming poor.

“I’m involved in the HBO adaptation [of Parasite]. It will be a black comedy. I’m working in close cooperation with screenwriter Adam McKay. This time I’m giving my input as a producer.”

He is also busy with his next movie, an animation project. “It was inspired by a French scientific book that my wife bought and brought home,” he said. “The pictures of the sea creatures were extraordinary. After that my imagination took over.”

Parasite star Song Kang-Ho is one of the members on this year’s film jury, presided by Spike Lee. Song is joined by director Mati Diop, singer-songwriter Mylène Farmer, actress-director Maggie Gyllenhaal, writer-director Jessica Hausner, actress-director Mélanie Laurent, writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, and actor Tahar Rahim.
