'My Cousin Rachel' Is A Beautiful But Dull Gothic Mystery

What? This is not a sequel to 'My Cousin Vinny'?

My Cousin Rachel (NC16)

Starring Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin

Directed by Roger Michell

Handsome but dull Gothic mystery — adapted from Daphne Du Maurier’s 1951 novel — about a young Englishman (Sam Claflin) who suspects his late cousin (also played by Claflin) was murdered by the latter’s enigmatic wife (Rachel Weisz).

As he sets out to expose the potential homicidal gold-digger, he finds himself increasingly infatuated with her. Soon they have a scandalous affair that’ll not end well for either party.

The set-up is intriguing but the build up to the deliberately ambiguous finale is frustratingly plodding. Oh yes, the ending will mess with your mind alright — you’ll go, “Really, that’s it?” (**½)
