Starring Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper
Directed by Alexandre Aja
What’s more terrifying than being stuck in a dark place with an alligator? Being stuck with more than one alligator. That’s the quandary heroine Haley (The Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario, in top form) is in: how to save her pop (Barry Pepper) who’s trapped in the crawl space of their Florida home with said scaly predators during a Category 5 hurricane? Produced by Sam Raimi, the latest by French horror-maestro Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) is a straight-up, lean and mean, no-frills creature-feature, with Aja doing a bang-up job of milking suspense and shocks from the cruddy, claustrophobic conditions. (You need to schedule a tetanus jab and a long shower from just looking at the pit.) If you’re in the mood to see someone smash a gator on its head with a brick, then this is your kind of high-concept thrill ride. (***1/2)
