Movie Review: Jason Statham Takes On A Dino Shark In Camp-Fest ‘The Meg’

It’s 'Jaws' meets 'Jurassic Park'!

The Meg

Starring Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson

Directed by Jon Turteltaub

One of the most haunting moments in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a shot of the mighty Mosasaurus creeping up on an unsuspecting surfer. Now imagine that Mosasaurus getting its own solo movie, except it’s been replaced by a Megalodon. And the result? It’s Jurassic Park meets Jaws! Enter Jason Statham’s deep-sea rescue diver with a checkered past to stop the prehistoric beast from raising hell off the coast of southern China. Fans of silly B-grade creature-features will get a kick from the aquatic mayhem even if you’ve seen it a gazillion times before, and that the CG monster shark looks a tad cartoony. (You expected a little more from a movie that reportedly cost US$150 million.)  But first, they have to put up with the dreadful flirty dialogue between Statham and Li Bingbing’s marine biologist slash single mum.  (You should check Li out in another B-movie monster pic, Guardians of the Tomb, where she nearly kills the movie with her clunky exposition.) Anytime that happens, the movie grinds to a halt.  (**1/2)
