Molly Ringwald Tried To Discourage Daughter From Going Into Acting: "You Can't Squash Your Child's Dream"

In the end, the 'Pretty in Pink' star had to support her 17-year-old daughter Matilda's dreams.

Molly Ringwald wanted to discourage her daughter Mathilda from going into acting.

The Breakfast Club star explained how she didn't want Mathilda, 17, to follow in her footsteps but realised that she couldn't "squash" the dreams of her child.

Ringwald told the On with Mario Lopez podcast: "Like most actors who have grown up in the business, I tried to discourage it as much as I could. But you can't squash your child's dream so I try and be as supportive as I can.

"I just give her the tools to be the best possible actress she can be. It's a hard business but she knows that and is going in with her eyes open."

Ringwald — who also shares 11-year-old twins Adele and Roman with writer husband Panio Gianopoulos — revealed that it is "stressful" now that her kids can watch the 'Brat Pack' movies she starred in such as Sixteen Candles.

The 53-year-old star said: "My eldest has watched some of my John Hughes films and that was really stressful and I'm getting ready to go through it again with the twins."

Ringwald also rejected suggestions that 1980s classics like The Breakfast Club should be rebooted for modern audiences.

She said: "I don't believe in reboots. I hope those movies inspire people but they should stand on their own."

In the podcast, Ringwald also said that she is keen to return as Mary Andrews in the TV series Riverdale having been absent from recent episodes.

Asked if she would be appearing on the show again, she said: "Possibly, I'm doing a limited Netflix series which I can't talk about yet but it made unavailable to do Riverdale. But who knows, for the future you never know what's going to happen.

"No one knows what's going on with Mary Andrews but I love everyone there and would love to come back."

Ringwald can be seen next in The Kissing Booth, dropping Aug 11 on Netflix— BANG SHOWBIZ
