Starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig
Directed by Alexander Payne
In the not-too-distant future, mankind turns to miniaturisation to avert an ecological crisis. If man is reduced to the size of a 13cm action figure, he’ll consume less resources and hence produce less waste.
But Matt Damon’s everyman has another reason go micro: He wants to upsize his miniscule fortune in the Lilliputian-verse where he can afford a mansion.
Sideways director Alexander Payne’s high concept satire plays like a Black Mirror version of Gulliver’s Travels, but without the payoff.
It starts out playful (love the cellular reduction procedure sequence) before getting all preachy about class chasm and social inequality. Underwhelming. (***)
