Liam Neeson Shows Off A Particular Set Of Skills In ‘The Commuter’

He’s train-ed for this kind of stuff.

The Commuter (PG13)

Starring Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Sam Neill

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra

Liam Neeson plays an insurance agent having a very bad day: He’s in debt, just got retrenched, and, he’s blackmailed by sinister forces into locating an unidentified high-value asset on the same train as he is.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who’s worked with Neeson in Unknown, Run All Night and Non-Stop (so, they must really like each other), the Strangers on a Train-meets-Murder on the Orient Express set-up makes for a fairly distracting, if disposable whodunit.

Where credibility strains, Neeson wins us over with his sincere and sympathetic turn as the everyman hero (’cos he’s an ex-cop, he still has a particular set of skills to fall back on). Alas, you stop caring when it gets derailed (literally) in the explosive finale. (**1/2)
