Dark Figure Of Crime (NC16)
Starring Ju Ji-Hoon, Kim Yoon-Seok
Directed by Kim Tae-Gyoon
This gripping Korean true-crime thriller tells a familiar story of a serial killer who loves to taunt the copper by bragging about his macabre body of work.
Ju Ji-Hoon (Along with the Gods: Two Worlds) plays Tae-Oh, a rascal who confesses to Kim Yoon-Seok’s hard-boiled detective Hyung-Min to killing seven people.
But here’s the thing: Tae-Oh is behind bars and will only reveal where he buried their bodies if Hyung-Min visits him and barters for intel with money and gifts (he wants glasses with transitions lenses!).
Most of the time, the audience — like the hero — is wondering if Tae-Oh, played by a detestably gleeful Ju, is a scammer or sociopath. What exactly is Tae-Oh’s end game?
Whatever the agenda, he’s planted a splinter in Hyung-Min’s mind and clearly having a blast messing with the cop bent on seeking closure for the cold-case victims.
The actors’ magnetic performances made the procedural compelling, even when it’s a little by-the-numbers and sluggish in some parts. (***1/2)
