Josh Brolin Tries To Put Out The Fire In Admirable Wild Fighter Biopic ‘Only The Brave’

It’s no ‘Backdraft’, though.

Only The Brave (PG13)

Starring Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Taylor Kitsch

Directed by Joseph Kosinski

After a tour in the sci-fi realm with Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, director Joseph Kosinski ventures into the contemporary world for the real-life story of an elite squad of Arizona firefighters called the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

As intriguing as his subjects are, Kosinski never quite finds the right balance between emotional drama and explosive action — the former centres mainly on Josh Brolin’s stoic pack leader and Miles Teller’s messed-up rookie; the latter in the form of the terrifying blazes (both digitally and practically recreated) that ultimately claim some of the firefighters’ lives.

The movie isn’t bad, just a bit underwhelming. For more on wildfire fighters,  check out the Leonardo Dicaprio-produced docu-series Fire Chasers on Netflix. (**/12)
