Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem
Directed by Darren Aronofsky
J Law and Javier Bardem play a couple whose tranquil lives spiral out of control after they open their home to strangers. That’s the easiest way to describe the Black Swan director’s latest opus, one febrile head-trip that must be seen to be believed.
Look closer: Beneath its veneer of a home invasion thriller is an audacious parable about Mother Nature under siege by a wayward humanity, with Lawrence as her surrogate.
Watching her character, simply known as Mother, baffled, battered and slowing losing her shit as she fights tooth and nail against the unwelcome — and hostile — guests (who represent overpopulation, political divisions, religious strives and ecocide) is an unsettling sight to behold. (***1/2)
