Starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac
Directed by George Clooney
The title refers to a fictional 1950s suburban white American town, where Matt Damon’s salaryman father is a victim of a home invasion. But this isn’t a random crime — there’s a larger conspiracy at work.
George Clooney’s latest directorial effort — based on an old Coen Brothers script written in the 1990s — is a strangely inert comedy thriller (think Fargo meets A Serious Man).
Blame it on Clooney’s ambition: He also wants to make a commentary about race relations (the residents are against a black family moving in). He should’ve just stuck to one story because the mash-up doesn’t really gel. (**1/2)
