Good news for Wonder Woman fans: Diana of Themyscira will be back on the big screen for the third time, with Gal Gadot reprising the title role and Patty Jenkins returning to write and direct the concluding chapter in the DC superhero trilogy.

Warner Bros made the announcement after the simultaneous release of Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and in select cinemas on Christmas Day in North America. The movie — which also stars Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig — opened in Singapore on Dec 17.

WW1984 took home US$16.7 million (S$22.16 mil) from North American cinemas over the weekend. (Variety calls the earnings “robust" in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.)

On HBO Max, the movie was viewed by “nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers on the day of its arrival,” and millions more via cable and wireless access, according to the studio.

Outside North America, WW1984 earned US$68.3 million from 40 overseas markets since its Dec 16 premiere. Globally, it made US$85 million. The sequel is said to have cost US$200 million.

WW1984 has so far received mixed reviews, scoring 65 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and 59 per cent on Metacritic. Click here for 8days.sg’s review.

Patty Jenkins previously told The New York Times that she would consider directing a third Wonder Woman movie if it got a theatrical release. Her response came after the studio revealed its plans to release its entire 2021 slate day and date on HBO Max and in cinemas.

“We’ll see what happens,” she said. “I really don’t know. I know that I’d love to do the third one if the circumstances were right and there was still a theatrical model possible. I don’t know that I would if there wasn’t.”

Warner Bros said the Wonder Woman threequel will have a traditional theatrical release. No release date has been announced.

With Wonder Woman 3 being fast-tracked, Jenkins will have a lot on her plate. She’s also making the Star War spin-off Rogue Squadron, which is slated for 2023, and the Cleopatra biopic which reunites her with Gal Gadot.

Gadot’s Wonder Woman will next be seen in Zack Snyder’s special four-part version of Justice League, due on HBO Max in 2021.
