The initial backlash to Will Smith’s blue-skinned Genie when the trailer of Aladdin dropped didn’t stop audiences from making the movie, a live-action remake of the 1992 animated classic, a smash around the world, including Singapore, where it ruled the weekend box-office (May 23-26).

 

Aladdin is Disney’s second live-action remake to hit the big screen this year, after Tim Burton's Dumbo ​​​​​​​in March. When you’re through the blue genie’s shenanigans, there’s The Lion King coming in July, and in October, Angelina Jolie breaks bad again in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to 2014 remake of The Sleeping Beauty.


Let’s rank the movies we flocked to see at the cineplexes, from the lowest- to the highest-grossing, according to theatrical earnings adjusted to inflation (we’ve included the original grosses as well). For the purpose of this story, we also consider the sequels the remakes spawned.
