Filmmaker Seeks Justice In Brother’s Murder In Oscar-Nominated Docu ‘Strong Island’

It’s simply heartbreaking.

Strong Island (M18)

Starring Yance Ford, Harvey Walker

Directed by Yance Ford

In 1992, William Ford, a 24-year-old African-American teacher, was fatally shot by a white mechanic, following an altercation. Ford was unarmed but the shooter was never convicted because an all-white jury didn’t find enough evidence to charge him for murder.

This all-too-familiar tale of miscarriage of justice is revisited by the deceased’s filmmaker sister (now a transgender man) in this powerful docu which won the Special Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is an Oscar contender this month.

To hear Ford’s family talk about his (dashed) hopes and dreams and last days is unbearably heartbreaking. On Netflix. (****)
