Fast & Furious 9 Delayed Again, Pushed Back To June 24

Bad news for Fast & Furious fans: Fast & Furious 9 has been delayed again.

In a statement released on Monday (May 17), the movie’s distributor UIP said, “In view of the latest Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) restrictions implemented by the Singapore government, the release of Fast & Furious 9 has been postponed to June 24 2021 in Singapore. This will now be in line with the film’s US and worldwide release, including most of Asia.”

The Justin Lin-helmed sequel was originally slated to open here on May 26, with sneaks this weekend. Advance ticket sales went on last Wednesday.

“Early figures for the Fast & Furious 9 advance sales were extremely promising, demonstrating strong demand for the biggest cinematic event of the year,” UIP’s Managing Director Flora Goh tells 8days.sg via Whatsapp.

Fast & Furious 9 was supposed to debut in Apr 2020 but like every other Hollywood blockbuster, its debut was affected the COVID-19 pandemic. The studio first moved its US release to Apr 2, 2021, then May 28, 2021, and finally June 25, 2021 — three days after the original movie’s release 20 years ago (what?!).

From Sunday (May 16) to June 13, Singapore is placed under Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) restrictions after a recent spike in COVID-19 community cases. During this period, cinemas can only accommodate up to 100 people (with Pre-Event Testing or PET), or 50 (without PET); with safe-distancing between groups of up to 2 people. No food or drinks are allowed.

The other Hollywood titles scheduled to hit cinemas in the coming weeks include Cruella (May 27), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 3), A Quiet Place Part II (June 10), Spirit Untamed (June 10), In the Heights (June 17) and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (June 17). Will they blink and move as well?
