Goodbye Christopher Robin (PG)
Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, Wil Tilston
Directed by Simon Curtis
Handsome but stodgy biopic of children’s author AA Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and how his traumatic WWI experiences and his son, Christopher Robin (adorable newbie Wil Tilston), inspired him to create Winnie-the-Pooh.
Ostensibly, it’s about an artist and his muse, but it’s also about toxic celebrity culture (how does a six-year-old survive media scrutiny?), gender neutrality (Christopher’s dressed in girlish clothes), and surrogate parenting (Margot Robbie’s crappy mum prefers to let her son spend time with Kelly McDonald’s devoted nanny).
Clearly, the movie’s bitten off more than it can chew — it feels like the truncated version of a BBC mini-series. (**1/2)
