Crazy Rich Asians Director Jon M Chu To Direct Live-Action Remake Of Lilo & Stitch

Another Disney animated film is getting made into a live-action movie.

Jon M Chu is in talks to direct Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Crazy Rich Asians director has been tipped to helm the project, based on the 2002 animated flick and the subsequent cartoon TV series.

Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a six-year-old Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai, who is raised by her 19-year-old sister Nani after their parents died in a car accident, and a blue extraterrestrial animal-like creature called Experiment 626, who is adopted by Lilo as her dog and renamed 'Stitch.

It has not yet been revealed if the movie will get a traditional release or if it will feature on Disney Plus, the studio's subscription streaming service.

No screenwriter or actors are attached to the project yet.

However, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing, with Ryan Halprin serving as an executive producer.

Lilo & Stitch isn't the only Disney project Chu is attached to. He's also directing the pilot and co-execute producing  Disney+'s adaptation of the 1988 fantasy movie Willow

That film, helmed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas, starred Warwick Davis as the titular farmer tasked with protecting a special baby from an evil queen who vows to destroy her and take over the world. Val Kilmer co-starred as a mercenary protecting Willow.

“Growing up in the ’80s, Willow has had a profound effect on me,” Chu said in a statement. "The story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream come-true. It’s a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can’t wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us.”

Production on Willow is set to return to Wales next year, where much of the original film was shot.
