Charlize Theron Drops A Bombshell As Cold War Spy In ‘Atomic Blonde’

Meet the year’s other Wonder Woman.

Atomic Blonde (R21)

Starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella

Directed by David Leitch

John Wick co-director David Leitch’s ultra-slick ‘punk rock noir’ sees Charlize Theron  in full-blown badass mode — more so than she was in Mad Max: Fury Road — as Lorraine Broughton, an M16 agent assigned to recover a dossier of agents’ identities in Berlin, just days before The Wall’s collapse. (It’s essentially same plot as the first Mission Impossible.)

Theron spends most of her screen-time looking like Debbie Harry (the title’s a nod to a Blondie song), parading in stylish outfits, engaging in assorted brutal close-quarter combat (shooting, kicking, punching, shagging) soundtracked to the percussive beats of a synthesizer-driven ‘80s soundtrack (New Order! Depeche Mode! Nena!).

Forget James Bond: He’s a [expletive] pussycat compared to Broughton — she'll eat him for breakfast, lunch, dinner and, if there's anything left, supper. Oh yes, Theron is this year’s other Wonder Woman. (***1/2)
