An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (PG)
Starring Al Gore
Directed by Bonni Cohen & Jon Shenk
President Donald Trump’s recent decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord — whereby more than 200 countries agree to reduce carbon emissions — put a damper on what’s supposed to a reassuring follow-up to the Oscar-winning docu An Inconvenient Truth .
Bad news aside, it’s inspiring to see “recovering politician”-turned-eco warrior Al Gore preaching the green gospel. By the way, if you’re still a climate-change denier, nothing in this sequel will change your mind. (You’re no different than a hardcore smoker — if grotesque warning labels on ciggie packs don’t deter you, nothing will.)
Yes, it’s depressing to see the planet imperiled by climate change, but not everything is gloomy, though. In Georgetown, Texas — “the reddest city in the reddest county” — Gore meets a mayor whose approach to switching to 100 per cent renewable energy is driven by common sense, not bipartisan politics. “Doesn't it just make sense — the less stuff you put in the air, the better it is,” he says. There’s still hope for us. (***1/2)
