A Dog’s Purpose is a family-friendly adventure whose own purpose is to tug at your heartstrings.

Cat lovers: This movie is not for you (hiss).

A Dog’s Purpose (PG)

Starring Bryce Gheisar, KJ Apa, Dennis Quaid Directed by Lasse Hallström

A Dog’s Purpose based on W Bruce Cameron’s 2010 best-selling novel is one dog’s journey, searching for the purpose of his existence over several reincarnated lifetimes. Throughout, his bond with a boy named Ethan (played as an eight-year-old by Bryce Gheisar; a teen by KJ Apa; and an adult by Dennis Quaid) remains unbroken. Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström seems partial to dogs, having directed My Life as a Dog (1985), an Oscar-nominated picture which, okay, wasn’t about an actual canine, and Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009). If you, too, are a dog person, you will tear up at this family movie on the devotion of man’s best friend. That is even though you know it is a manipulative heart-tugger complete with talking animal (voiced by Josh Gad of Frozen), and that your slobbering pooch can think only of his next meal and not eschatology. 3/5 (for dog people); 2.5/5 (for everyone else)
