47 Meters Down (PG13)
Starring Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Matthew Modine
Directed by Johannes Roberts
Mandy Moore and Claire Holt (The Originals) play sisters whose shark cage diving trip in Mexico hits a snag, leaving them stranded on the seabed — you guessed it — 47 metres below the surface.
On top of the depleting oxygen in their tanks, the ladies are surrounded by Great Whites. That’s all you need to know. This is not a movie you watch for the characters — think of this as a crisis management tutorial.
A good shark thriller is few and far between; the last one that terrified us silly was last year’s The Shallows. And 47 Meters Down, taut and precise, is a worthy entry. It’s no Jaws (or even Open Waters), but it gets the job done. Because half the movie is set entirely in murky waters, those with fears of drowning, claustrophobia and thalassophobia should steel themselves. If there was a movie that begs to be seen in virtual reality format, this is it. (***)
