'The Adventurers' Is A Scenic Travelogue Disguised As A Heist Flick

The Adventurers (PG)

Starring Andy Lau, Shu Qi, Jean Leno

Directed by Stephen Fung

Andy Lau plays a just-out-of-prison burglar planning the mother of all heists with his tech-savvy crew (Shu Qi and Yo Yang); Jean Reno is the world-weary cop getting in their way; and Eric Tsang, the duplicitous crime boss bankrolling the high-stakes operation.

Stephen Fung’s Europe-set crime caper — a remake of John Woo’s Once a Thief — is flashy but flaccid, a sleepy actioner that’s too afraid to over-exert itself for fear of waking up. But The Adventurers is adventurous for a different reason: With its focus on the Instagrammable sights of Cannes and Prague, it works much better as a travelogue. (** ½)
