Trailer Watch: Marvel Studios' ‘Captain Marvel’

Brie Larson plays the superhero who will bring Thanos to his knees (we think).

Marvel Studios has finally dropped the trailer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first solo female-led adventure, Captain Marvel.

Oscar winner Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who acquires superpowers after a workplace accident exposes her to alien DNA.

She then leaves Earth to join Starforce, which directors Anna Boden — the MCU’s first female director — and Ryan Fleck likened to the Seal Team Six of space, on the Kree planet of Hala.

In the trailer, we catch a glimpse of Samuel L Jackson as a young Nick Fury, before he lost his left eye (and before he has contact with alien races), Clark Gregg as his S.H.I.E.L.D colleague Phil Coulson, and Jude Law as Captain Marvel’s Starforce commander.

If you pause at 1:20, you can spot Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan doing the Power Walk as Minn-Erva, a Starforce sniper.

The 1990s-set story involves Captain Marvel and friends trying to stop a race of pesky shape-shifting green aliens called the Skrulls (led by Ready Player One’s Ben Mendelsohn) from invading Earth.

After her origin story is told, Captain Marvel will next appear in the yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4 where she’s said to play a critical role in undoing the damage Thanos caused in Infinity War. (A quick recap: Captain Marvel is the one Fury paged before turning to ash in the post-end credits stinger of Infinity War.)

But that's another story for another time. Captain Marvel opens in cinemas March 7, while Avengers 4 arrives on May 2.
