Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai was recently awarded with the first ever Chaplin Award for Asia. The award was presented to the 56-year-old by the granddaughter of famed comic Charlie Chaplin, Kiera Chaplin, at the Shangliu Tatler Annual Ball in Shanghai on November 10.
In his thank-you speech, Tony shared that Charlie has always been a performer that he has looked up to, and that he was honoured to have accomplished enough to be able to be given the award.
After knowing of his win, Tony’s wife, actress Carina Lau specially flew a number of Tony’s close friends, including singer Kenny Bee, former actress Chingmy Yau, actor Tony Leung Ka-Fai, former actress Anna Ueyama, singer Alex To and their spouses, in to Shanghai, for a surprise party.
Carina shared that she had kept the party a secret from Tony, saying, “I didn’t tell him that I’d invited his friends to Shanghai. After he finished his interview, and had returned for a change of clothes before heading out to walk the red carpet, his friends came together to surprise him.
Fans were also elated to see the reunion of Tony and Chingmy, who had starred opposite each other in the 1996 movie, Blind Romance.
