If you were an avid viewer of old TVB dramas and Stephen Chow movies, chances are you would recognise Hongkong veteran actress Yu Mo Lin. The 83-year-old has been in showbiz for over 40 years and has appeared in at least 200 TV shows and films. She made her name playing unattractive characters, which earned her the title of 'Hongkong’s Ugliest Actress'.

However, she is anything but ugly. After she retired from TVB in 2010, Mo Lin, who is unmarried and has no children, donated her NT$350,000 (S$16,500) pension to a primary school, which was then named after her, in a rural area of China. Her good deed did not come to light until two years later.

“I don’t consider myself great, but I do all this out of sincerity,” she said. “I may not have money, but I am willing to donate! I hope these children will be able to leave the mountains and go into the city to find jobs and live a better life.”

One of her friends was also quoted as saying: “When it comes to the most charitable people in the Hongkong film and television industry, the men are represented by Louis Koo, and the women are represented by Yu Mo Lin.” Given Louis’ stellar reputation, that’s really quite the compliment.
