Suzanne Hsiao looks back on her battle with drug abuse

In 1999, Taiwanese actress Suzanne Hsiao made her showbiz debut at the age of 23, playing A Yu in the movie, March of Happiness. The film was an instant hit, and she soon shot to stardom.

However, she was unable to resist the temptation of drugs, and soon fell prey to them.

“From an ordinary person, I was elevated to the status of a god. Then, I fell to become a ghost, and now, I’ve returned to being a person,” the actress shared in a recent interview.

In 2007, she was first sentenced to 49 days in jail after being caught taking cocaine. After her release, she returned to her old ways, and was sentenced to 19 months in prison. After her second release, she was put on probation for four years. In 2010, she relapsed, and was sentenced once again to 18 months in prison.

After her release from prison, Suzanne has finally managed to stay on the straight and narrow, even planning a return to the entertainment industry.

Looking back at her past actions, Suzanne mused, “I was lucky to have hit it big the very minute I entered the industry. At such a young age, I had every thing, but I was not mature enough.”

The 42-year-old admitted that she couldn’t resist the temptation of drugs back then, and that it was exceedingly difficult to “change from being a ghost, to a person”. However, she admitted that she understood why so many people found it hard to believe that she is now drug-free.

“I did not miraculously become okay immediately following my release [from prison]. I’m not that strong; I’ve only managed to settle down within these three years,” she said.

Suzanne shared that she is very thankful to her parents and Taiwanese actress Stephanie Hsiao, as well as her husband, whom she married in 2017.

“My husband stabilised me - after getting to know him, I became a person once again. But, there are moments where I’ll feel weak, with no confidence in myself,” Suzanne confessed.

Now, she is setting her sights on making her return to the entertainment industry, having done a photoshoot recently. “I've never left the industry, so I don’t think there’ll be any trouble making a comeback,” she said.

She shared that she has received a number of scripts and offers, but most of the time, she’s being given “weird roles, like a mother”. Therefore, she spends most of her time at home, playing with her cats and cooking.

“I’m pretty satisfied with my life now; it’s vibrant and comfortable,” the actress said.
