Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo file for divorce

They were married for less than two years

Korean actors Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo are calling it quits after less than two years of marriage.

Song Joong Ki announced through his lawyers today (June 27) that he filed for divorce at the Seoul Family Court on June 26.

The actor also released a statement through his lawyers, in which he wrote, “Instead of arguing over who is to blame [for our split], I hope that our divorce proceedings can be wrapped up amicably. I ask for [the public’s] understanding that it is difficult to discuss the details of my personal life.”

The 33-year-old added, “I will recover from my wounds and do my best as an actor to repay everyone through great projects in future.”

Shortly after his statement was released, Song Hye Kyo confirmed the news with one of her own. She shared that the reason for their divorce is “personality differences that the both of us were unable to overcome”.

Like Song Joong Ki, she said she will not be sharing further details of their split, and asked for the public to refrain from speculating about their private lives. Rumours of cheating have been widely speculated as the reason for their split. Sources claimed Song Hye Kyo became romantically involved with her Encounter co-star Park Bo Gum, while Song Joong Ki has been linked to his stylist.

After the news broke, residents living in the same neighbourhood as the Songs claimed that they moved out of their S$11.98 million mansion months ago as there has been nobody taking out trash from their home.

Just last month, he declared that Song Hye Kyo was his “biggest cheerleader” while filming his new drama, Arthdal Chronicles and that he had become “more emotionally stable” after marriage.

However, reports of the couple’s relationship being on the rocks also emerged earlier this year when Song Hye Kyo was spotted on multiple occasions without her wedding ring.

The former power couple met on the set of 2016 hit drama Descendants of the Sun, and started dating below the radar. They announced in July 2017 that they were going to get married and tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on October 31, 2017. They have no children together.
