Ever since undergoing knee surgery in 2017, the Hongkong star has been photographed going about his daily life in a wheelchair. According to Apple Daily, Sammo was instructed by his doctor "to walk less and lose 18kg” so as to not aggravate his injuries, which were sustained from decades of filming action sequences.
In fact, Sammo’s daughter-in-law, Zhou Jiawei, once revealed on a talkshow that Sammo was so weak at one point, he didn't even have the strength to carry his grandsons.

Sammo at the MGGA
But Big Brother Sammo surprised everyone last Saturday (Jul 20) at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) when he walked on stage unassisted to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. He also appeared slimmer and healthier than he has in years.
In his acceptance speech, Sammo said: “Thank you for recognising my career. There’s a lot of fresh meat in the film industry, I am old meat. It’s been so many years since I became an actor, but I never once thought of retiring. I still want to continue filming for the next few decades."
