Yesterday afternoon (Mar 28), the usually quiet and empty area in the middle of the ninth floor of the Mediacorp Campus became abuzz with activity as stars and staff from the Chinese Drama and Chinese Entertainment Production teams poured in for the Star Awards 2019 Creative Achievement Awards.

The internal awards ceremony, which was hosted by Quan Yifong and Desmond Ng, aims to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Mediacorp’s creative staff in the past year. A total of four accolades were handed out: Best Screenplay, Best Variety Research Writer, Best Variety Producer, and Best Director. The winners were selected by a panel of esteemed judges from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, including many other noted filmmakers.

Lau Ching Poon was awarded Best Screenplay for her work on 29th February; Loong Li Li picked up the Best Variety Research Writer gong for Taste of Love; Khow Hwai Teng was crowned Best Variety Producer for the Star Awards 2018 show; and the trophy for Best Director went to Blessings 2 helmer Doreen Yap, who was unable to accept her award personally as she is currently in Taiwan.

There were also many light-hearted moments on stage thanks to the interactions and camaraderie between the artistes and the nominees. For example, the ever-cheeky Yifong went up to each Best Variety Producer contender to divulge what it’s like to work with them (both good and bad points were included), while stars from each of the Best Director nominees’ shows shared their own amusing anecdotes.

There were also two special performances during the event. The programme opened with a live rendition of the new Star Awards theme song by SPOP SING! alumni Jarrell Ng, Marcus Tay, Karena Yeo, and Daryl-Ann Jansen, and about halfway through the show, Desmond and Bonnie Loo teamed up to perform the Hokkien soundtrack from dialect drama How Are You?.
