Since 2000's X-Men, the Stan Lee Cameo has become a fixture in Marvel live-action movies and TV shows. So much so that it has even spawned its own Wikipedia page. A hot-dog vendor. A postman. A mental asylum patient. A DJ in a strip club… they are some of the 30-plus roles the comic book legend, who passed away on Monday at age 95, had played over the years. Lee also appeared in Stan Lee Cameo School, a parody clip — directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks) — that pokes fun at his role as the face of Marvel Comics.
Even though his cameos were brief and seemingly random, a fan theory suggests that Lee was actually playing an all-seeing cosmic entity known as the Watcher, which explains the different characters he’d portrayed in various Marvel movies and TV shows. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he's seen regaling a group of Watchers with his adventures as a FedEx man in Captain America: Civil War. Yes, it’s very meta.
Whether it’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the non-MCU canon (produced by Sony and 20th Century Fox), he's just there — to observe things. Sometimes it would be a blink-and-you’ll-miss walk-on, other times he would just deliver a throwaway line. Whatever his role, his appearance always brought a moment of levity to the superhero mayhem.
At press time, it’s reported that Lee had filmed his cameos for the upcoming Captain Marvel and the yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4. No word on whether he will turn up in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Here, we pick 10 of our favourite Stan Lee cameos which stand out from the crowd. It isn’t an easy task. Either is watching a future Marvel movie without his cameo.
