The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for people to feast on sticky rice dumplings and, in Taiwan, try to balance an egg on its end to so as to be granted a full year of good luck. (Yes, that’s what all those photos of eggs you might have seen on social media were all about).
While it’s usually a pretty fun occasion (especially if you love your bak chang), Taiwanese singer Rainie Yang recently admitted that she grew up not exactly being fond of the traditional holiday.
“Since I was a child, I didn’t have a good impression of the Dragon Boat Festival ‘cos it falls on the same day as my lunar birthday,” she wrote in an Instagram Stories post. “When I was younger, I would celebrate my lunar birthday with my family. Once, before my parents got divorced, my dad decided to tell what I thought was a very unfunny joke.”
